The other day I'm watching TV and on comes a Burger King commercial. Right from the get-go I could tell this wasn't the typical 'have it your way' commercial. Instead they proceed to show clips of actual customers flipping-out after hearing that the Whopper had been discontinued by Burger King.
The commercial stops short of giving you the complete run-down on what was taking place and the call-to-action is to visit the website whopperfreakout.com. Of course I jumped on my laptop and went straight there to check it out.
What I saw was amazing. Burger King pulled a prank in one of their stores of telling customers that they no longer were selling the iconic burger, the Whopper. Upon hearing the news the customers are visibly upset and are in complete shock. They can't believe it.
At one point Burger King takes it a step further and places burgers from Wendy's in customers' bags. When the customer takes the order back to the counter, an employee tells them that this couldn't have come from them because it's a Wendy's burger. One customer actually says, "I HATE WENDY'S!" with a conviction that goes beyond acting.
I can't do this justice - you're going to have to watch it for yourself and see why this is GENIUS ADVERTISING for Burger King. whopperfreakout.com
Of course I'm not recommending you try a prank like this in your business however we should all strive to create products and experiences that create, not just loyal customers, but fans!
