Last night on my way home I stopped by Guitar Center to buy some guitar strings for my son. While at the cash wrap I noticed that Motley Crue had put out a new album. I asked the clerk if it was 'any good.' He said he hadn't purchased it yet but he planned on it.
Then another clerk behind him said it was a fantastic album. The clerk taking my order then piped-in, "Do you want to pick it up today?" (great on his part)
I stated, "No, I'd rather go online first and check it out to see if I like it."
He replied, "Oh, you don't want to get in that discussion with me, dude!"
My reply to that: "Hey, I pay for my music. I'd prefer to go online and listen to a preview on iTunes and then buy what sounds good to me. Why would I buy a complete album and pay for music I might not like?!"
He then said, "I guess."
As I left I thought that this clerk was probably a musician of sorts and was part of the 'old establishment' where music had always been prospected, produced, marketed, and sold in the same way for decades. These people (by 'people' I'm referring to the corporate side of the music industry and those that support the 'old ways') have been doing all they can to 'dig in their heels' when it comes to buying music the 'new way.'
Which brings me to my point - there is always going to be a 'new way' that creeps up in any industry. If you're in an industry where there's a 'new way' about to get stuffed down your throat... don't rail against it. Embrace it and look for new opportunities. Otherwise, you're going to be left behind griping about 'how things used to be.'
Embrace change!
